About BMW Group
BMW Group is one of the world's leading premium manufacturers of automobiles and motorcycles. At BMW Group Plant Landshut, the company is expanding its expertise in Physical AI and taking on central software development tasks for AI-supported robotics in component production.
The focus is on open software platforms, the generation and processing of training data, simulation and motion planning, as well as the training of robotic systems. These activities complement pilot projects already underway exploring humanoid robotics at Plants Leipzig and Spartanburg. The core question: which tasks will be suited to humanoid robotic systems in the future — particularly where flexibility, fine motor skills and an understanding of the working environment are required.
Humanoid Robotics Focus at BMW Group
- Physical AI Software Stack: Development of open platforms combining deterministic programming with Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models for flexible, scalable robot training.
- Demonstration-Based Learning: Humanoid systems acquire skills through motion capture suits, data gloves and camera systems — converted into generalisable behavioural policies.
- Real-World Validation: New approaches are tested outside ongoing production, implemented in pilot projects, and then scaled up in stages.
- Industry-Academia Collaboration: Direct cooperation with Athenyx Robotics (WZL RWTH Aachen spin-off) and University of Applied Sciences Landshut.
